Spring training is coming to an end and the Red Sox season is about to begin. A lot can be taken from the Red Sox 2017 spring training, however, like every team, there are still a handful of questions coming into April for the Sox.
Well, the Red Sox officially began their spring training and their quest for another World Series Championship. Spring is in sight, anxiety is kicking in, and the skeptics are starting to come out. So, that means one thing, baseball is almost here!
The Red Sox have lost 5 out of the last 6 games and went 4-5 in their last big homestand of the season. Now, they are about to go on a daunting 11-game West Coast road trip. Is this a safe time to say that we should be a little concerned still with our pitching? I think so. Should Dave Dombrowski retract his statement that the team isn’t looking to add another significant piece? Probably.
I know there are many great things to talk about in terms of the Red Sox’s performance during the first half, but I’m going to talk about the weaknesses that the team needs to focus on improving in the second half. If they fix some key issues and continue doing the things they are doing well, we could be very happy come playoff time. But, the issues are not small.
After the first couple weeks of the season and a few starts from Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright, there was much talk about his success. Some said at the time it wouldn’t last and a few others were ready to jump on the Wright train. Almost at the halfway point of the 2016 season, if you haven’t jumped on the Wright bandwagon, what are you waiting for?
Coming into the 2016 season, the Red Sox had a bunch of “what if’s” that needed to fall into place in order for Red Sox fans to feel comfortable with this year’s team. Before the season even got underway, the “what if’s” seemed even more formidable when Eduardo Rodriguez and Carson Smith landed themselves on the disabled list before opening day.
On Friday night, Steven Wright finally got his first win of the 2016 campaign. Despite a 1-2 record to show for his first three starts of the season, he has started off the 2016 season in impressive form.
